Doniford Bay has plenty to keep you busy, but on a longer stay it’s nice to have a change of scene for a day. Weston-super-Mare is one of the easiest days out from the caravan: around an hour by car along the A39 to Bridgwater and then up the M5, and it has everything a proper seaside town should.
The beach and the Grand Pier
Weston’s beach is huge, with a long stretch of sand right along the seafront. In the summer there are still donkey rides on the sand, and the Grand Pier has rides, an arcade and indoor attractions, so it works whatever the weather is doing.
One thing to know before you go: the tide goes out a very long way at Weston, and beyond the sand is thick mud that is dangerous to walk on. Stay on the sand and keep an eye on the children near the water’s edge.
Marine Lake
At the north end of the beach, Marine Lake holds the sea water in when the tide goes out, so there’s always somewhere to paddle. It’s a good spot for younger children with buckets and spades.
Rainy day options
If the weather turns, there’s still plenty to do indoors:
- The Helicopter Museum has a big collection of helicopters, and children can climb inside some of them.
- Weston Museum in the town centre covers the town’s history as a seaside resort.
- Puxton Park, just off the A370 on the way into Weston, has indoor play as well as animals and outdoor rides, so it suits a changeable day.
- The Grand Pier, which is mostly under cover.
Quieter spots
If the seafront is busy, head north to Sand Bay, a quieter beach with dunes and a long walk along the shore. Worlebury Woods above the town has woodland paths and the remains of an Iron Age hillfort, and at the south end of town Uphill has a small hill with an old church on top and great views across the bay.
Check what’s on before you go
Weston has events most weekends, from markets and craft workshops to shows and family days. Have a look at what’s on in Weston-super-Mare before you set off, so you can plan the day around something going on in town.
Back to the caravan
One of the best parts of a day out is coming back to the quiet. After a busy day in Weston, the drive home to Doniford Bay, a cup of tea and the sea from the caravan is hard to beat.
